Hagar Responds to Afghanistan Earthquake
In the heart of Afghanistan, a devastating earthquake has left a trail of destruction. On October 7th, 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck near Herat in western Afghanistan. Located just two hours from Herat city, this disaster has rocked 20 villages, leaving behind profound devastation.
The death toll has surpassed 2300, and more than 10,000 injured. Homes have been reduced to rubble, and countless families find themselves homeless, grappling with the harsh reality of impending winter. In Afghanistan, winter is fast approaching, threatening vulnerable people with a lack of shelter in the cold.
But there’s another hidden danger lurking in the shadows – vulnerability to human trafficking, especially in the wake of natural disasters. The need is urgent, the stakes are high, and we’re taking action.
Emergency Needs
As winter approaches, the situation becomes increasingly dire for our Afghan brothers and sisters. It’s a race against time to ensure their safety and well-being. The earthquake has not only taken lives but has also left many without shelter, warmth, or hope. In this critical hour, Hagar is stepping up once again, bringing relief to those in dire need. Our mission is simple: to provide comfort, shelter, and hope.
How Hagar is Responding
Hagar was among the first to respond when the Paktika earthquake struck in June 2022, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to those in need. Now, as winter looms and the urgency intensifies, we are gearing up for a response that matches the gravity of the crisis. It’s a community effort: local people responding to local needs.
A team of four from Hagar in Afghanistan – a driver, female counsellor, and male counsellor – are on the way to Herat. There, they will extend our arms to the local families, providing the warmth of psychosocial support. Winter blankets specially designed for extreme conditions will be distributed to 300 people, offering a lifeline against the biting cold.
Additionally, clients from the Restoring Lives through Livelihoods program will craft clothing for survivors, creating a beautiful cycle of support. These clothes will not only warm the bodies of those affected by the earthquake but also the hearts of the women from our program as they support their fellow Afghans. Together, we create a double benefit.
Make an Impact Today
With a target of $50,000, we have the power to touch the lives of 300 families, impacting approximately 1500 individuals. Here’s how your generous support breaks down:
$15 covers the cost to provide clothes and shoes to each person in need
$25 covers the cost of specialized winter blankets
$40 covers the cost of crucial counselling sessions
We aim to secure these funds by October 31st, ensuring a sustained response through the end of December.
Stand with us and stand with Afghanistan. Together, we can make a profound impact in the lives of those who need it most.
